The following article is from The Hindustan Times, 10th July.

American and Indian usage of English can foul up life for you
in the US, warns Amir Tuteja

Call, don't ring!
-----------------------
I have lived in the US a little over 30 years now, and am
thoroughly Americanised in the usage of English. I come across the
Indian version from frequent contact with the Indian embassywallas,
Indian students and visitors from India. There are so many differences
big and small, in the meaning and pronunciation, in the usage of the
same language - English - between Americans and Indians, that it can be
amusing and even embarrassing at times.
Many moons ago, the first time I went to McDonald I did not
know what was meant by the phrase "to go" ( which means to take the
food away and not eat there ). The girl at the counter asked me "to
go?" and I thought she was asking me to leave!
I was upset and retorted " I have come here to eat, why should
I go?" It took some explaining on both sides before I could place my
order.
Americans are very verbose in saying things, which in themselves
are somewhat different from those in India. One almost always says "How
are you doing?" when you meet an acquaintance, and the accepted reply
is usually "Pretty good" and not just "Fine".
The reply to "Thank you" is "You are welcome" and not "Mention
not". But if you say thanks to someone like a sales girl, she is more
likely to say "Uh-ha".
Unlike in India,"Excuse me" deserves an answer like "No problem".
When you are about to part, sometimes, you have to play games of
getting in the last word. Expressions like "see you later", "have fun",
"take care", "have a nice weekend","don't work too hard", come in handy.
I am also reminded about the use of the expression "Really". This
is used to mean "Oh, I see". For example, if somebody asks you where do
you work, and you answer "government", pat comes the exclamation "Really
!", which a first few times sounds like they do not believe you.
There are a lot of words and phrases which are used differently.
A funny example is that an "eraser" is never called a "rubber", because
the latter is slang here for a contraceptive!
An Indian friend at a restaurant, when asked, if she would like
anything more at the end of the meal, answered: "No, I will just take
the bill". You should have seen the look on the waiter's face - of
course, she should have asked for the check which she could have then
paid with a bill(s).
Many American pronunciations are different from the British ones
used in India. For instance, one pronounces "schedule" as "skedjule".
Also "coupon" is pronounced as "q-pon". When the "i" is preceded by an
"m" or a "t", it is pronounced as "my" and "ty" - for example the words
"semi" and "anti". When it is preceded by a "d", unlike in India you do
not say it as "die", but as "dee", for example the word "divorce".
An elderly Indian couple have been living in this country for the
last 20 years or so. This incident occurred a few years ago. They were
in one of those huge parking lots at a department store. On returning to
their car after shopping they realised they had a dead battery on hand.
So they looked around and the lady spotted a man about to get into his
truck. She told her husband that she would ask that man if he could
help them. She approached him. The lady said, "Hi". The man replied
"Hi, may I help you." The lady said "Yes please, could you please give
me a jump".
At this the man was rather shocked, and sort of taken aback. He
appeared to turn red, until he noticed the elderly gent in the car. Then
he laughed and remarked that "Oh you mean that your car needs a jump st-
art". The lady remarked "That's what I said".
Later in the car when the puzzled lady narrated this incident to
her husband, he almost drove off the road roaring with laughter. It was
only after he explained what "jump" meant, that the lady turned red. In
fact we discuss this incident almost every time we go to dinner at their
place.
By the way, she has never been to that shopping complex ever
since this incident out of fear of bumping into that man!

Tailpiece : In the US you give someone a "call" not a "ring" on the
telephone. A newly arrived Indian went to the university library looking
for a job, and had a long discussion with the lady in charge. While
leaving he told her, "Well I'll give you a ring tommorrow."
The lady was so stunned that she didn't speak for a few minutes,
and then blurted out, "Isn't it a bit early for that?"

Humor Improves Health
The adage that laughter is the best medicine is now being backed up by
scientific evidence. A new study conducted by the University of California at
Irvine is the first to show that merely the anticipation of a positive event
or outcome, such as watching a humorous video, can elevate people's moods and
potentially boost immune system functions.

Previous studies led by Lee Berk, MD, PhD, demonstrated that laughter can fend
off many of the physiological effects of distress. When humans are stressed,
their bodies release large quantities of the hormones cortisol and
epinephrine, better known as adrenaline. The secretion of these hormones sets
off a cascade of responses including increased blood pressure, heart rate,
blood sugar and energy available to the brain and muscles. Although this
stress response works wonderfully in flight-or-fight situations, chronic
stress can suppress immune system functions including anti-viral and anti-
tumor defenses.

Lee Berk, MD, PhD
Mirthful laughter can ameliorate the damaging effects of the stress hormones,
because laughter enhances the secretion of growth hormone, an enhancer of
these same key immune responses. Berk explains, "The biological effects of a
single one-hour session of viewing a humorous video can last from 12 to 24
hours, while other studies of daily 30-minute exposure to such humor and
laughter videos produces profound and long-lasting changes in these measures."

In new work, Berk and his colleage David Felten, MD, PhD, show that the
expectation of watching a funny video can work wonders for the mood and
potentially the immune system as well. The mood states of 10 men were
evaluated using Profile of Mood States (POMS), which measures changes in
tension, depression, anger, vigor and fatigue. The POMS was administered two
days prior, 15 minutes prior and immediately following the viewing of a funny
video of the men's choice. Results showed that two days before viewing, levels
of depression decreased 51 percent, anger fell by 19 percent, confusion
diminished by 36 percent and fatigue by 15 percent.

The findings conclude that the anticipation of laughter, as much as the humor
event itself, can initiate positive mood changes prior to the actual
experience. Berk contends that the expectation of positive events is a synonym
for the "biology of hope," which can decrease the release of stress-related
hormones, boost immune response and potentially contribute to wellness and the
therapeutic healing process.

Joseph - 11th-born overall. Definitely his father's favorite son, from his
favorite wife, it was Joseph who was sold for slavery into Egypt by his
jealous brothers (see Coat Of Many Colors). There, with God's help, he rose to
become the highest official of the Pharaoh, saving the nation from the famine
that was prophesied. When the rest of Jacob's family moved to Egypt to escape
the famine, it was Joseph who had made their survival possible (they would
remain in Egypt 400 years, eventually becoming slaves until the Exodus). While
there, Joseph had 2 sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, who were themselves made into
individual tribes of Israel to bring the number back to 12 - the priestly
tribe of Levi was not counted separately, but was absorbed among the other
tribes.

So, this first level of human consciousness we might term "waking"
consciousness, has brain cell electrical discharges that pulse in rhythmic,
sweeping waves of activity across the brain's surface between 13 and 30 Hz (or
times per second). It's a brain dance of electricity that sweeps across the
brain in rhythmic waves. We call these rhythmic electrical waves of the
brain: "brainwaves".

Scientists, who have explored this interesting dance of the electrical waves
that sweep across the brain, have noticed that different states of
consciousness always have a corresponding, associated dance of electrical
waves sweeping across the brain. They eventually cataloged these pulses of
electrical activity into four general categories: Beta, Alpha, Theta and
Delta.

Scientists love to name things with Greek letters and the like - it sounds
more, well, scientific. It just wouldn't sound right if you named them
logically in English - like A, B, C and D. They couldn't even get that
straight in Greek - B, A, T and D for Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta. As we will
see later, other researchers have seen other types of brainwave activity (I'm
one of those researchers!) which shows activity slower than the slowest
brainwaves recognized (that was my work) and faster than the fastest
brainwaves recognized and named them also after Greek letters (I'm afraid I'm
guilty here as well).

So, this more rapid 13-30 Hz pulsing of the brainwaves associated with
externally directed, linear thinking of the ordinary "waking state" falls into
the "Beta" category of brainwaves associated with 13-30 Hz.

Of a mind over 'The Matrix'

By Alex Beam, Globe Columnist, 4/10/2003

ar, pestilence, bankruptcies -- I don't know about you, but I have had all the
reality I can handle. It's time to reenter . . . ''The Matrix.'' The campaign
against Saddam Hussein is winding down and the hype for ''The Matrix
Reloaded'' movie is ramping up -- coincidence, or something more? How
convenient of Bush & Co. to spool down the war just in time for Warner Bros.
to provide some real entertainment.

It is indeed time to return to what Newsweek -- that unpredictable smorgasbord
of information and absurdity -- called ''The Year of `The Matrix.' '' In a
vast advertisement-thinly-disguised-as-a-cover-story, Newsweek dared to
suggest that in creating the fantastically popular, digitally unreal world
of ''The Matrix,'' filmmakers Andy and Larry Wachowski ''borrowed heavily from
several sources, mostly comic books, Japanese anime and Asian kung fu movies.''

I should think not! If one of the most eminent boatload of fee-for-hire
philosophers can be believed, the true sources of ''The Matrix'' are Plato,
the Gnostic gospels, Ren Descartes, and Mahayana Buddhism. In preparation for
the May 15 release of ''Reloaded,'' Warner Bros. retained Brooklyn College
professor Christopher Grau to recruit some of the country's best known
academic philosophers -- David Chalmers, Colin McGinn, James Pryor, and Hubert
Dreyfus among them -- to write 14 articles analyzing the occasionally
mystifying content of the greatest movie ever made.

''I was able to get people who are superstars in the world of philosophy,''
Grau says. ''Of course no one has ever heard of them.'' Part of the
assignment's allure was the exotic material: ''I'm a fan of the movie, and
writing about it was a lot of fun,'' says Julia Driver, an ethics professor at
Dartmouth who has been showing the first film to students, with excellent
results. Grau explains an added attraction: ''We were able to pay rates
comparable to mainstream journalism, which compares favorably with the
professional philosophy journals. They pay nothing.''

I have always found philosophy texts to be heavy paddling, and these essays
are no exception. Wheaton College's John Partridge has one, ''Plato's Cave and
`The Matrix,' '' which is pretty comprehensible. Chalmer's contribution, ''The
Matrix as Metaphysics,'' is borderline understandable, until you reach this
warning sign: ''This slightly technical section can be skipped without too
much loss.''

Chalmers, director of the Center for Consciousness Studies at the University
of Arizona, likens the perceptual challenge offered by ''The Matrix'' to the
philosophical conundrum of an ''envatted'' brain, a laboratory brain stored in
a vat and programmed to receive stimuli from the ''real world.'' He seemed
quite fascinated when I mentioned Krang, the envatted brain who battles the
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from inside the Technodrome. But I digress.

You can read the articles at the official Matrix website, www.thematrix.com.
And they are being peer-reviewed by readers for the Oxford University Press
for possible publication. ''If Oxford printed these, that would be huge,''
Grau admits.

I would commend them to your attention, because, like me, you may gain some
practical information. ''It may well be that we're living in a matrix,'' says
Chalmers, who has given the matter considerable thought. ''It's not something
I would rule out.''

Animation finds a new home in the Matrix
By Michel Marriott
April 3 2003
Livewire

When the film adaptation of Stephen King's supernatural horror tale
Dreamcatcher opens in Australia today, it will have an added attraction and,
for certain filmgoers, perhaps a bigger one: a nine-minute computer-animated
film that revisits the dark science-fiction universe of The Matrix.

The short, Final Flight of the Osiris, is intended as a prelude to The Matrix
Reloaded, the first of two feature-length live-action Matrix sequels due this
year. Final Flight will offer what may be the most sophisticated expression of
photo-realistic, fully computer-generated imagery to date on the big screen.

``We tried to do a lot in those nine minutes,'' says Andy Jones, the director
of the film, which took 13 months to complete. ``We had to build so many sets,
so many sentinels,'' he says, referring to mechanised hordes that look like a
cross between an angry squid and a bomb.

Everything on screen, from the glint in a character's eye to the character
itself, from the clouds in the virtual sky to a crack in the virtual street
below, is created with software and high-powered computers. Each frame
contains, on average, 15 layers of digital details, Jones says. The final
product was transferred to film so that it could be widely shown in theatres.

Jones, 30, who was the animation supervisor of the digital sinking in Titanic,
says some of the biggest advances in Final Flight are in the animation of
human skin, clothes and other textures.

advertisement

advertisement

Executives at Warner Brothers, the Matrix producers , describe Final Flight as
``chapter 1.5'' of the saga. And in a Matrix sort of way, its story - written
by the series' creators, Andy and Larry Wachowski - is simple.

In a post-apocalyptic future in which a ragtag band of humans struggle against
machines that have enslaved most of humanity in a virtual world known as the
Matrix, a hovercraft called the Osiris discovers the machines drilling their
way to the underground hideout of free humans. The ship's crew must battle and
escape thousands of sentinels long enough for the ship's beautiful first mate,
Jue, to enter the Matrix and leave an emergency warning message.

That message sets up the action for The Matrix Reloaded, which will open on
May 15.

The storyline is also fleshed out with more traditional animation in eight
other shorts being released this year, some of them free online at
theanimatrix.com and in a video game.

Making computer-generated animation more realistic has not, however, been a
recipe for box-office success. While cartoonish fare such as the Toy Story
movies, Monsters Inc., Shrek and Ice Age has earned hundreds of millions of
dollars, lifelike computer-generated images have generally been part of
larger, live-action films such as the computer-generated Gollum character in
last year's Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001), for which Jones was animation
director, is the only full-length photo-realistic computer-generated film to
date.

Imagine if you will, an ordinary man, a gray. Let's call him Arthur Dent just
to be silly... One day he wakes up wherever he lives in the world, and
feels 'different'. He is thinking, thinking in ways he hasn't since he was a
teenager and used to do radical things like grow his hair beyond the tops of
the ears strictly enforced by his high school in '64 or smoke a real cigarette
behind the corner shop. There is a vague feeling of meaning..but he hasn't
worked out about what yet.

As he sips his morning coffee, he begins to contemplate the nature of work and
recreation in connection with his job. Is he doing anything worthwhile? Is he
happy with his life? Is it all slipping away as he follows his daily routine?
Suddenly he has an urdge to use his hard earned resources to do something FUN
for a change.

This odd mood carries through with him during the day and just after
tea/coffee break, he starts thinking about both the neighbor he has been
wanting to punch and the way he used to feel about his wife when they first
got married. Odd combination of thoughts..Somehow he begins to see his
neighbor as a real person that needs either understanding or exterminating
(but he hasn't gone off the wall enough to break the law either way) and
decides that he really does still love his wife and they should do something
FUN together soon, like he was thinking this morning. He also decides what
will be an effective way to deal with the neighbor and resolves to cut down
the lelandi during the night when no one will see him, or be able to prove
anything. Why the hell not after all?

By lunchtime these combined influences have him making plans for changes he
could make in his life if he had the courage, and something begins to stir in
him. Just after the afternoon break, he has some sudden insights into the
nature of the cycle of life and the sacrifices he has made to get his current
position. He is also suddenly horny as hell. These distractions lead to
thoughts of creative endeavors he had wanted to do someday when he was young
and idealistic. The seeds of a real mid-life crisis are born.

With these thoughts swirling in his awakening mind, he goes home and presents
some ideas to his family who immediately wonder what's got into him, but hey,
they've been thinking weird things today too. Their reactions lead to Arthur
examining his own importance and seeing what he is to them, as well as
connecting to them in a way that he never did before. Suddenly he understands
(psychic) his own closest loved ones in a way that he never did before, and is
able to communicate and discuss some really outrageous ideas for things to do
to make their lives more interesting.

By bedtime, it is beginning again. The wave has travelled to the other side of
the globe and the work/play node is being reactivated. It will effect Arthur's
dreams and the solidity of the day's new insights and plans for changes.
Starting with setting the alarm for 2am to go cut down that lelandi...

The effectiveness of the colour nodes, depends on the balancing wave of multi-
coloured rays to maintain balance. Dissent breeds cooperation and completion.

Life, the Universe and Everything

"Arthur's first sensations of hope and trepidation had instantly been
overwhelmed by astonishment, and all sorts of thoughts were battling for the
use of his vocal cords at the moment."

"He stood up straight and looked the world squarely in the fields and hills.
To add weight to his words he stuck the rabbit bone in his beard. He spread
his arms out wide.
'I will go mad!' he announced."

"Arthur felt happy. He was terribly pleased that the day was for once working
out so much according to plan. Only twenty minutes ago he had decided he would
go mad, and now here he was already chasing a Chesterfield sofa across the
fields of prehistoric Earth."

"Fine,' said Arthur, and his consciousness stepped out again for a quick
breather. His body flopped back on the grass."

"His face froze for a second of two and then began to do that terribly slow
crashing trick that Arctic ice floes do spectacularly well in the spring."

"Arthur had adopted his normal crisis role, which was to stand with his mouth
hanging open and let it all wash over him."

"Arthur lay in startled stillness on the acceleration couch. He wasn't certain
whether he had just got space-sickness or religion."

"Arthur nodded wisely to himself. After a while he realized that this wasn't
getting him anywhere and decided that he would say 'What?' after all."

"He lay, panting heavily in the wet air, and tried feeling bits of himself to
see where he might be hurt. Wherever he touched himself, he encountered a
pain. After a short while he worked out that this was because it was his hand
that was hurting."

"Ah,' effervesced the little man, 'and did you have a wonderful time?'
Arthur started to choke violently on his drink.
'What a wonderfully exciting cough, 'said the little man, quite startled by
it, 'do you mind if I join you?'
And with that he launched into the most extraordinary and spectacular fit of
coughing that caught Arthur so much by surprise that he started to choke
violently, discovered that he was already doing it and got thoroughly
confused. Together they performed a lung-busting duet that went on for fully
two minutes before Arthur managed to cough and splutter to a halt."

"Well, so am I alive, aren't I?' retaliated Arthur, haggard with adventure and
anger. His eyebrows were leaping up and down as if they wanted to punch each
other."

"His fingers fumbled to release the safety catch and engage the extreme danger
catch as Ford had shown him. He was shaking so much that if he'd fired at
anybody at that moment he probably would have burned his signature on them."

"Arthur yawed wildly as his skin tried to jump one way and his skeleton the
other, while his brain tried to work out which of his ears it most wanted to
crawl out of."

"Bet you weren't expecting to see me again,' said the monster, which Arthur
couldn't help thinking was a strange remark for it to make, seeing that he had
never met the creature before. He could tell that he hadn't met the creature
before from the simple fact that he was able to sleep at nights."

"He hoped and prayed that there wasn't an afterlife. Then he realized there
was a contradiction involved here and merely hoped that there wasn't an
afterlife."

Marsjanie

Do bożymy - daleczyzny, w szmer i otchłanie -
A dołem - szumy leśne, zgielk drozdów i zięb -

A przywiozą nam z nieba - rozmodlone ćmy,
I zwierzęta zadumane - i zgubne baśnie.
I nagle zrozumiemy, że to jeszcze - my -

I pośmiertną wiedzą krzepi istnienia wątek...

I malejąc w docześnie srebrniejącą płoć,

A nauczą nowych pieszczot. bo o czymś wiedzą...

Obczyzno, przyswojona w pieszczocie i śnie!...
Tajemnico, co posiadasz - usta i dłonie!

Za jej sen - w mym uścisku, za pieszczotę nóg,
Za wniknięcie pocałunkiem w jej czary żyzne -
Oddam chętnie, natychmiast - na rozstaju dróg -
Żywot wieczny i tę całą - zagrobowiznę!

W ślad za nią będzie kroczył niewidzialny mops,
Co podziemne węsząc zmory, wyje w niebiosy
Lub szczeka głosem czujnie rozśpiewanych kobz,
By odstraszyć złe uroki - złe sny - złe losy.

Z jednej jawy wejdą w drugą - i w trzecią jawę!...

A wy, coście szarzyzny uprawiali brzydź
I zbiorową w pyskach złudę srożyli dumnie,
I w zawrotny przepych słońca wejść bezrozumnie?

Już odtąd - z odwróconym do błękitu łbem,
Z wiarą w nową zaobłoczność, w odkrycia niebne
Pobrniecie niedołężnie - między snem a snem -
Od przydrożnych wierzb przyjmując - guzy chwalebne !...

Guzy, które złagodzą pychę waszych wad
I okupią uporczywość ślepego grzechu...

ulicach Bagdadu, zdążając pośpiesznie do mego pałacu.

- Wariat, wariat! - krzyczeli jedni.

- Szaleniec, szaleniec! - wołali drudzy.

- Obłąkaniec, obłąkaniec! - wrzeszczeli inni.

- Niespełna rozumu, niespełna rozumu! - mruczeli dość głośno ci, którzy stali
w moim pobliżu.

Zestawiając te okrzyki i wywrzaski bez zbytniego trudu doszedłem do wniosku,

chwili.

- A gdzież jest miejsce wypadku?

- Tam - na środku placu, gdzie ścisk i tłok największy. Tam właśnie tkwi ów
dziwny jegomość, którego nikt nie może zrozumieć. Bądź jednak cierpliwy, a

- wrzasnął mi wreszcie do ucha.

- Kto ucieka i przed kim?

Rozumiesz? Uciekają! Bądź zresztą cierpliwy, a dowiesz
się wkrótce innych,. ciekawszych szczegółów.

- Jakaś nowa, a widocznie nie cierpiąca zwłoki wiadomość szła właśnie z ust do
ust.

- Mniejsza o to, kto i przed kim! - zawołał sąsiad. - Dosyć że wciąż jeszcze!

W tej chwili do uszu mego sąsiada doszła wiadomość następna.

- Jest ich tysiąc! - wrzasnął gwałtownie, udzielając mi nowej wiadomości. - Ni

Rozumiesz?

Słowa te wzbudziły we mnie pewne uzasadnione obawy.

do przedstawicieli szarego końca, i ponieważ wzmożony krzyk i zgiełk tłumu

Spiąłem konia ostrogami i piersią końską torując sobie drogę dotarłem do
środka placu. Nie omyliły mnie przeczucia! Na samym środku placu z czupryną
rozwianą w cztery strony świata, z twarzą boleściwie pokurczoną i miejscami
pobladłą, z dłońmi na kształt dwojga rozszalałych pomioteł, wzniesionymi ku
najdalszym przestworom niebieskim stał, a raczej tkwił, a raczej sterczał
robiły wrażenie bramy zajezdnej, a czasem - przeciwnie - wrażenie jakiejś
zgoła samotnej, zbytecznej i niewiarogodnych rozmiarów litery O, jak gdyby ta
litera była główną, a nawet jedyną literą alfabetu! Z wnętrza owej litery, a
straszliwą a wymagającą niezwykłego pośpiechu wiadomością. Zauważyłem na
domiar, iż czerwonoskóry nos wuja Tarabuka podrygiwał konwulsyjnie, jakby
przerażony wyrazem reszty oblicza, z którym go tak ściśle łączyły węzły

dziewcząt i poznałem w nich natychmiast- powiernice natchnień mego wuja. Obok
każdej dziewczyny stał młodzieniec i rumak. W chwili gdym to zobaczył,
młodzieńcy dosiedli właśnie rumaków i porwawszy wpół każdy swoją dziewczynę

Chwytajcie! - zawołał z rozpaczą nieludzką. - To utwory moje!
Moje utwory!

- Wariat! Wariat! - zawołano znowu w tłumie. - Szaleniec! Obłąkaniec! O jakich
on utworach gada?

- Utwory moje, utwory! - wrzeszczał wuj Tarabuk. - Było ich tysiąc i wszystkie
uciekły! Uciekły i uniosły ze sobą wszystek skarb mego ducha! Znalazły sobie
jakichś młokosów, urwipołciów, wisusów spod ciemnej gwiazdy i uciekły z nimi

Wuj Tarabuk znieruchomiał, zesztywniał, stracił chwilowo czucie, rozum i wolę.
Ująłem go pod ramię i skierowałem jego kroki ku pałacowi. Szedł posłusznie i
bezwiednie, chociaż z widocznym trudem. Tłum gapiów towarzyszył nam aż do
samego domu.

Gdym wszedł z wujem do pokoju, szepnął głosem doszczętnie złamanym:

- Ktokolwiek jesteś, zły duch czy przyjaciel, posadź mię w fotelu, gdyż jestem
bezwzględnie zmęczony, a nie mam siły woli, której nakaz potrafiłby
doprowadzić mię do postawy siedzącej.

Usadowiłem wuja w fotelu i stanąłem tuż obok.

- Wuju - rzekłem - opamiętaj się i uspokój. Czy nie poznajesz mnie? To ja,

Life, The Universe and Everything

The unhappy inhabitants of planet Krikkit are sick of looking at the night
sky above their heads - so they plan to destroy it. The universe, that is. Now
only five individuals stand between the killer robots of Krikkit and their
goals of annihilation. They are Arthur Dent, a mild mannered space and time
traveller, who tries to learn how to fly by throwing himself at the ground and
missing; Ford Prefect, his best friend who decides to go insane to see if he
likes it; Slartibartfast, the indomitable vice president of the campaign for
Real Time, who travels in a ship powered by irrational behaviour; Zaphod
Beeblebrox, the two-headed, three-armed ex-head honcho of the universe; and
Trillian, the sexy space cadet who is torn between a persistent Thunder God
and a very depressed Beeblebrox.

Excuse me, but are you ... aliens?

Chapter Twenty-seven
It was the same hill, and yet not the same.
This time it was not an Informational Illusion. This was Krikkit itself and
they were standing on it. Near them, behind the trees, stood the strange
Italian restaurant which had brought these, their real bodies, to this, the
real, present world of Krikkit.

The strong grass under their feet was real, the rich soil real too. The heady
fragrances from the tree, too, were real. The night was real night.

Krikkit.

Possibly the most dangerous place in the Galaxy for anyone who isn't a
Krikkiter to stand. The place that could not countenance the existence of any
other place, whose charming, delightful, intelligent inhabitants would howl
with fear, savagery and murderous hate when confronted with anyone not their
own.

Arthur shuddered.

Slartibartfast shuddered.

Ford, surprisingly, shuddered.

It was not surprising that he shuddered, it was surprising that he was there
at all. But when they had returned Zaphod to his ship Ford had felt
unexpectedly shamed into not running away.

Wrong, he thought to himself, wrong wrong wrong. He hugged to himself one of
the Zap guns with which they had armed themselves out of Zaphod's armoury.

Trillian shuddered, and frowned as she looked into the sky.

This, too, was not the same. It was no longer blank and empty.

Whilst the countryside around them had changed little in the two thousand
years of the Krikkit wars, and the mere five years that had elapsed locally
since Krikkit was sealed in its Slo-Time envelope ten billion years ago, the
sky was dramatically different.

Dim lights and heavy shapes hung in it.

High in the sky, where no Krikkiter ever looked, were the War Zones, the Robot
Zones --- huge warships and tower blocks floating in the Nil-O-Grav fields far
above the idyllic pastoral lands of the surface of Krikkit.

Trillian stared at them and thought.

``Trillian,'' whispered Ford Prefect to her.

``Yes?'' she said.

``What are you doing?''

``Thinking.''

``Do you always breathe like that when you're thinking?''

``I wasn't aware that I was breathing.''

``That's what worried me.''

``I think I know ...'' said Trillian.

``Shhhh!'' said Slartibartfast in alarm, and his thin trembling hand motioned
them further back beneath the shadow of the tree.

Suddenly, as before in the tape, there were lights coming along the hill path,
but this time the dancing beams were not from lanterns but electric torches ---
not in itself a dramatic change, but every detail made their hearts thump
with fear. This time there were no lilting whimsical songs about flowers and
farming and dead dogs, but hushed voices in urgent debate.

A light moved in the sky with slow weight. Arthur was clenched with a
claustrophobic terror and the warm wind caught at his throat.

Within seconds a second party became visible, approaching from the other side
of the dark hill. They were moving swiftly and purposefully, their torches
swinging and probing around them.

The parties were clearly converging, and not merely with each other. They were
converging deliberately on the spot where Arthur and the others were standing.

Arthur heard the slight rustle as Ford Prefect raised his Zap gun to his
shoulder, and the slight whimpering cough as Slartibartfast raised his. He
felt the cold unfamiliar weight of his own gun, and with shaking hands he
raised it.

His fingers fumbled to release the safety catch and engage the extreme danger
catch as Ford had shown him. He was shaking so much that if he'd fired at
anybody at that moment he probably would have burnt his signature on them.

Only Trillian didn't raise her gun. She raised her eyebrows, lowered them
again, and bit her lip in thought.

``Has it occurred to you,'' she began, but nobody wanted to discuss anything
much at the moment.

A light stabbed through the darkness from behind them and they span around to
find a third party of Krikkiters behind them, searching them out with their
torches.

Ford Prefect's gun crackled viciously, but fire spat back at it and it crashed
from his hands.

There was a moment of pure fear, a frozen second before anyone fired again.

And at the end of the second nobody fired.

They were surrounded by pale-faced Krikkiters and bathed in bobbing torch
light.

The captives stared at their captors, the captors stared at their captives.

``Hello?'' said one of the captors. ``Excuse me, but are you ... aliens?''

}this is holy galaxy !!!

Explanation: Blossoming in nearby galaxy the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC),
this gorgeous nebula is energized by radiation and winds from a massive star
whose surface temperature approaches 100,000 degrees. The composite color
image from the European Southern Observatory's Melipal telescope resolves
details in the energetic nebula, with emission from helium atoms in blue hues,
oxygen atoms in green, and hydrogen atoms in red. While emission nebulae
generally show the familiar red light from ionized hydrogen atoms - hydrogen
atoms with their electrons stripped away - ionized helium atoms are tracers of
even higher energy interactions. The intriguing filaments of helium emission
make this and other recently studied emission nebulae most exceptional. A Wolf-
Rayet star, the massive star powering this nebula, created a cosmic bubble
with stellar winds in the early stages of its life. Part of the bubble is
still apparent as the large arc in the lower portion of the image. The area
pictured is about 150 light-years across.

Groucho Marx was a master at delivering one-liners. He is quoted by many
people.
Below are just some of my favorite quotes.

_____________________________________________________________________________

How do you feel about women's rights ? I like either side of them.

Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it, misdiagnosing it and
then misapplying the wrong remedies.

Age is not a particularly interesting subject. Anyone can get old. All you
have to do is live long enough.

Here's to our wives and girlfriends...may they never meet!

Mrs. Teasdale: He's had a change of heart.
[Groucho]: A lot of good that'll do him. He's still got the same face.

I sent the club a wire stating, Please accept my resignation. I don't want to
belong to any club that will accept me as a member.

Send two dozen roses to Room 424 and put 'Emily, I love you' on the back of
the bill.

I never forget a face, but in your case I'll be glad to make an exception.

A man is as young as the woman he feels.

Anyone who says he can see through women is missing a lot.

I didn't like the play, but then I saw it under adverse conditions-the curtain
was up.

Now there's a man with an open mind - you can feel the breeze from here!

There's one way to find out if a man is honest-ask him. If he says 'yes,' you
know he is a crook.

To Margret Dumont: "I can see you and I married. I can see you bending over
the stove. I can't see the stove!

Dig trenches? With our men being killed off like flies? There isn't time to
dig trenches. We'll have to buy them ready made.

I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go
into the other room and read a book.

Those are my principles. If you don't like them I have others.

I've had a perfectly wonderful evening. But this wasn't it.

Either this man is dead or my watch has stopped.

The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing..if you can fake that, you've
got it made.

Military justice is to justice what military music is to music.

Military intelligence is a contradiction in terms.

She got her good looks from her father. He's a plastic surgeon.

I worked myself up from nothing to a state of extreme poverty.

Remember men you are fighting for the ladies honor, which is probably more
than she ever did.

Paying alimony is like feeding hay to a dead horse.

Last night I shot an elephant in my Pajamas and how he got in my pajamas I'll
never know.

We took pictures of the native girls, but they weren't developed. . . But
we're going back next week.

Politics doesn't make strange bedfellows, marriage does.

A child of five would understand this. Send someone to fetch a child of five.

I was married by a judge. I should have asked for a jury.

Marriage is the chief cause of divorce.

The Last Written Words of Luther:
Holy Ponderings of the Reverend Father Doctor Martin Luther
16 February 1546

_Dr. Martin Luthers Werke_,
(Weimar: Hermann Boehlaus Nachfolger, 1909),
Band 85 (TR 5), pp. 317-318.

Translated by James A. Kellerman

1. No one can understand Vergil's Bucolics unless he has been a
shepherd for five years. No one can understand Vergil's Georgics,
unless he has been a farmer for five years.

2. No one can understand Cicero's Letters (or so I teach), unless
he has busied himself in the affairs of some prominent state for
twenty years.

3. Know that no one can have indulged in the Holy Writers
sufficiently, unless he has governed churches for a hundred years
with the prophets, such as Elijah and Elisha, John the Baptist,
Christ and the apostles.

Do not assail this divine Aeneid; nay, rather prostrate revere the
ground that it treads.

We are beggars: this is true.

Notes:

1. This is a translation of WA, TR 5:168 (no. 5468) of a scrap of
paper that Johannes Aurifaber (a.k.a. Johann Goldschmied) found when
Luther died. Aurifaber wrote: "Luther ... wrote these words in Latin
on a slip of paper and put them on his table. I, Johannes Aurifaber,
wrote them down and Dr. Justus Jonas, Superintendent of Halle, who was
at Halle at the same time, took the slip of paper with him."
Unfortunately, this slip of paper has long since disappeared.

2. I have followed the account of the document as told by Aurifaber.
There are, however, divergent accounts of what was on that scrap of
paper. Since the original slip of paper has been lost, it is impossible
toascertain what Luther actually wrote. For other accounts, see
WA 48:241 and TR 5:317 (no.5677). Although the wording differs slightly,
the sentiment is the same.

3. The line in praise of Vergil's A enid is composed of nine feet of
dactylic hexameter, the meter in which the Aeneid is written. It is most
likely an adaptation or misquotation of two lines near the end of Statius'
The Aeneid (12:816f), a poem also written in dactylic hexameter and
profoundly influenced by Vergil's epic:

Nee tu divinam Aendeida tempta,
Sed Ionge sequere et vestigia semper adora.

Luther wrote:

Hanc tu ne divinam Aeneida tenta,
Sed vestigia pronus adora.

4. "We are beggars" is written in German; the rest of the document, in
Latin.

Cylinder Seals
The earliest cylinder seals to be found date from 3,500BC and were considered
valuable, especially those made from semi-precious stone.

Cylinder seals are small cylinder-shaped objects which has a carved scene or
design. When it is rolled on wet clay it leaves a 'print' and can be
reproduced many times.

The average cylinder is about 2.5cm high and 1.5cm in diameter. They were
usually made out of stone, but metal, ivory, wood, bone, shell and baked clay
also used.

The seals were used to mark ownership of property. Legal and commercial
documents were written on clay tablets and the engravers name was shown on the
imprint of a cylinder seal.
Some seals have writing (cuneiform) on them while other show scenes of gods,
religious stories and mythology.

Ex-Iraqi trooper warns of fedayeen fanatics
By Mark McDonald
Mercury News

IRBIL, Iraq - A former member of the Iraqi Republican Guard says coalition
soldiers should be especially wary of the black-clad fanatics known as the
Saddam Fedayeen, or Self-Sacrificers for Saddam -- the Iraqi paramilitary
fighters who have been attacking ground forces in southern Iraq.

``The fedayeen will never surrender, and every one of them will fight to the
death,'' said the former trooper, who said he served as an adjutant at the God
is Great Command Center in Baghdad. ``I went through training camp with them
and ate my meals with them. They were my colleagues, but they thought of
themselves as superior.

``In a way, they are superior. They are quite ready to die for Saddam. The
Americans should not underestimate them. They are very ferocious and
committed. They're capable of anything.''

The guardsman, who recently left the military after a three-year hitch,
trained alongside the fedayeen for several months in Baghdad. Because of their
brutality, he asked that his real name not be used. He was interviewed Monday
at his home in the northern city of Irbil.

Iraqi men, with some exceptions, are required to serve three years in the
military. For each 100 recruits, about 10 qualify for the Republican Guard.
But only one or two are allowed to become Fedayeen Saddam.

The unit was founded in 1995 by Saddam's notoriously violent son, Uday
Hussein, and a recent Jane's Sentinel Report put its membership at 40,000.
There's also a youth wing called Ashbal Saddam (Saddam's Lion Cubs) for boys
ages 10 to 16.

All the fedayeen, the ex-guardsman said, are volunteers. They swear their
allegiance to Saddam, and they have special blue patches on their uniform
sleeves bearing the motto ``God, Homeland, President.''

Once they're approved as fedayeen, the men wear black cotton hoods that expose
only their eyes, nose and mouths. They attend political-education seminars and
martial arts training. They get higher pay and the best available weapons,
including U.S.-made machine guns.

After their training, some fedayeen wear civilian clothes and act as secret
police. The former guardsman said they also serve incognito in regular army
and Republican Guard units, listening for political dissent.

``They are the security agents who are inserted into all the units,'' the
guardsman said. ``When you're in the army, you're never entirely sure who is
who.''

During the current war, the fedayeen are part of the so-called Execution
Battalions that are empowered to shoot would-be military defectors on sight.
They've also reportedly been shooting at civilians who have tried to flee
battle zones in the south.

The fedayeen's leaders report directly to the 38-year-old Uday. Western
intelligence agents say Uday has often used the fedayeen as his personal army.

A recent U.S. State Department report blames the fedayeen for the summary
execution of 200 alleged prostitutes. The report said the women were beheaded
and some of their families were forced to display the heads outside their
homes.

The Iraq War and the 'Deluge of Terror'
Ajai Sahni
Executive Director,
Institute for Conflict Management

Reprinted with permission from South Asia Intelligence Review (SAIR) Weekly
Assessments & Briefings, Volume 1, No. 36, March 24, 2003

As the war in Iraq intensifies, reports of 'peace demonstrations' as well as
more explicitly anti-US and Islamist extremist protests accumulate across
South Asia. These have been given great prominence in the media and have fed
Western apprehensions that the Iraqi campaign will give rise to new armies of
anti-US, anti-West, Islamist extremist terrorists, and a radical escalation of
terrorism in the foreseeable future, as Muslims express their 'anger' against
America's 'unjust war'.

It is significant that the intensity, spread and participation in these
demonstrations across South Asia, and even in Pakistan and Bangladesh, has
been muted, and does not compare with the violence in, for instance, Cairo,
Bahrain or even Brussels. More significantly, the scale of protests witnessed
in much of Europe has been immensely greater - in UK, for instance, an anti-
war demonstration in February brought together an unprecedented one million
protestors, and demonstrations on March 22 again mobilized an estimated
200,000 - 400,000 protestors. The most significant and inflammatory of the
protests in South Asia have been in Pakistan, particularly in areas currently
under the political domination of the fundamentalist and pro-Taliban Muttahida
Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), including Baluchistan and the North West Frontier
Province - areas that have been characterized by substantial movement of pro-
al Qaeda elements as well as suspected areas of major re-location of al Qaeda
and Taliban cadres. But even the MMA's 'million march' could put together
only 'several thousand protestors'. It was on Sunday, March 23, in Karachi -
the Pakistani Port city worst afflicted by sectarian and terrorist violence -
that the 'largest' of such protests took place, with the participation of an
estimated 70,000 protestors. It is useful to note that a demonstration of this
size, by South Asian standards - a region that often witnesses million-plus
political gatherings and demonstrations - is at best, minor. There have also
been small, though provocative, meetings, with substantial inflammatory
rhetoric, at various locations in Bangladesh, India and Nepal. In addition,
sermons after Friday prayers in some mosques across the region have tended to
focus adversely on the US led war, and at least some of these have contained
incendiary calls for violence against the US and Western allies.

The anti-war demonstrations have, however, gone well beyond the Islamist
extremist / fundamentalist constituency in South Asia, as in much of the
world. But this represents nothing more than the broad political uncertainty
and ambivalence over the morality and legitimacy of the US led campaign,
concerns that have been widely expressed even among the people in the
countries that constitute the primary Coalition partners - USA, UK and
Australia. These wider demonstrations have articulated apprehensions about,
but do not, in any measure reflect or impact on, the potential for escalated
terrorist action as a 'reaction' to the Iraq War.

Apprehensions of a 'deluge of terror' in the wake of the Iraq campaign are,
however, substantially misplaced and are located in a misunderstanding of the
nature of terrorism in general, and of Islamist extremist terrorism, in
particular. The defeat of Saddam Hussein cannot, on detached assessment, be
expected to provoke any great rise in anti-US terrorism sourced in South Asia.
Indeed, the very opposite holds true, and evidence of US weakness and
vulnerabilities, either during the Coalition campaign in Iraq, or in general,
would tend to encourage greater militant opportunism, particularly among the
communities and countries where extremist Islamist mobilisation has already
reached an advanced stage, with Pakistan and Bangladesh as the core areas of
such risk in this region.

This does not, however, exclude the possibilities of opportunistic strikes
against Western targets during or after the Iraq campaign. Such strikes would
exploit the existing pool and potential of trained terrorists, but do not
significantly reflect any dramatic increase in this pool, or in recruitment to
terrorist ranks. The fact is, terrorists strike when and where they have the
capacity to strike, and they strike at the maximal level of destructive force
available to them. That is the nature of terrorism. War or no war in Iraq, the
trajectory of terrorism will be defined by the capacities of its executors.

These capacities do not depend on any pool of shared 'Muslim grievances' -
real or imagined. A sufficient - indeed inexhaustible - pool of such
grievances already exists and the actual transformation of these into
terrorist cadres and actions depends on two specific variables: the intensity
and success of the process of terrorist mobilisation, including their
demonstrable abilities to strike critical targets and to instil a sense of
confidence and imminent victory in their sympathetic constituency; and,
conversely, the success and effectiveness, or otherwise, of the world's
counter-terrorism responses. In the post 9/11 phase, the incidence of
international terrorism has shown declining trends, not because the pool of
Muslim resentment suddenly contracted or evaporated, but rather because
increased, though still inadequate and selective, international cooperation in
counter-terrorism campaigns severely circumscribed the capacities of
terrorists to operate and strike. This was also substantially a consequence of
international pressure on supporters and state sponsors of terrorism, which
limited the impunity with which such entities could extended assistance in
terms of safe havens, infrastructure and opportunities for terrorist
recruitment, training, finance and weapons' supplies.

Fears of a radical 'intensification' of Islamist extremist terrorism located
in this region in the wake of the war in Iraq are, consequently, mistaken. The
threats emanating from extremist factions in Pakistan and Bangladesh - and
strongly projected by the state apparatus in Pakistan as justification for the
continued dictatorship in that country - are no more than threats.

It is useful, in this context, to recall the words of a Pakistan Army
Brigadier, S.K. Malik, who elaborated on his county's philosophy of terrorism
in his book, The Islamic Concept of War - a book that includes an
authoritative foreword by the then Pakistan President, General Zia-ul-
Haq: "Terror struck into the hearts of the enemies is not only a means, it is
the end in itself. Once a condition of terror into the opponent's heart is
obtained, hardly anything is left to be achieved. It is the point where the
means and the end meet and merge. Terror is not a means of imposing decision
upon the enemy (sic); it is the decision we wish to impose upon him."

If the fanatics of the MMA and of the array of extremist and terrorist
organisations operating out of Pakistan, or their affiliates in Bangladesh,
India and elsewhere, had the power to strike and destroy America or its
allies, they would already have done it. And if they are ever able to convince
themselves that they do possess such power, it is certain that they would use
it. The simple reason why they do not do so is because they lack this power,
and are aware of this deficiency. It is precisely this deficit that will
ensure that, even after the Iraq war, they will continue with the excesses of
their rhetoric, but will fail to escalate their campaign against US and
Western targets. The essence of this failure i

Late Night Joke Archives:

Today President Bush said we would stay in Iraq for as long as it takes. It’s
the same policy he had in high school.

Today Michael Moore made another impassioned anti-war speech – he went on and
on. Then finally the woman at the McDonald’s drive-thru took the mic back and
said, "You want your Big Mac combo or not? Make up your mind!"

In Europe a lot of people are upset with the U.S. over the war in Iraq. Lots
of boycotts going on. In Germany they have taken Coke and Budweiser off many
menus. This raises the question of "Who in Germany drinks Budweiser in the
first place?"

What Saddam Learned from Serbia, Stalin and the SS
by James Dunnigan
March 29, 2003
Saddam Hussein has always been a quick learner, and willing to change rapidly
to survive. He seeks out nations in similar situations (ruthless dictatorships
at war) and compares notes. He also looks at other brutal dictatorships of the
20th century and adopts techniques that worked for them. There are many
examples.

Serbia, whose former president is now on trial for war crimes, was engaged in
ethnic cleansing and war with its neighbors through most of the 1990s. The
Serbs became quite cozy with Iraq during that period. Saddam picked lots of
useful information on dealing with American air power and manipulating the
media. Serbia used masterful deceptions to save its tanks and artillery from
U.S. smart bombs. The Serbs also modified their anti-aircraft defenses to down
the first F-117 stealth aircraft destroyed in combat. Saddam has not had much
success copying these Serbian success. But Saddam has, apparently pulled off
another favorite Balkan trick. This is the "kill your own civilians to gain
media sympathy" routine. In the early 1990s, during the Serbian siege of the
Bosnian city of Sarajevo, mortar shells would sometimes fall into crowded
market places, killing and injuring dozens. The Serbs, who were guilty of many
atrocities, were blamed. But then some UN peacekeepers, while investigating
the attacks, noted that the location where the shells landed indicated that
they could only have been fired from Bosnian controlled territory. The Serbs
were also known to use this trick, but as with much else in the Balkans, no
one will admit anything.

But now you have "American missiles" mysteriously going off in Baghdad market
places. Foreign reports brought to visit the sight of the "American atrocity"
have noted that the craters are shallow, unlike the deep craters U.S. bombs
and missiles leave behind. There are also no fresh bomb or missile fragments
to examine. One is left with the impression that these were car bombs, not
smart bombs. The U.S. has also pointed out that most of the civilian
casualties in Baghdad so far have been from Iraqi anti-aircraft shells and
missiles falling back to earth. Iraq uses a lot of old, large, Russian anti-
aircraft missiles. The SA-2, for example, weighs 2.5 tons at launch and
carries 286 pound warhead. The SA-3 has a 132 pound warhead, and the SA-6 a
130 pound warhead. These missile warheads are supposed to go off in the air if
a target is not found, but this doesn't always work. In that case, the missile
falls to earth, where it's warhead usually goes off on impact. But the
pinpoint accuracy with which "American missiles" hit "crowded Baghdad markets"
in rapid succession is a little too coincidental, and has all the marks of a
Balkans bombing scam. Anything to get a photo op of "American atrocities" to
inflame Iraqis and overseas allies.

Russian dictator Joseph Stalin is another role model for Saddam Hussein.
Stalin set up a police state that even the Nazis admired for its brutal and
ruthless efficiency. Saddam particularly liked the Stalinist techniques of
establishing informers in every neighborhood or apartment house. This, coupled
with savage punishments for real or suspected traitors and their families,
created a fear among the population that made rebellion difficult. More
importantly, it created a group of thugs, torturers and secret policemen who
were hated by the population. This hate was good for Saddam, for it insured
the loyalty of these henchmen. If the Iraqi people got a shot at their
oppressors, they would quickly kill them. In the early days of World War II,
Stalin used his "organs" (as the Russians called the secret police and
security forces) to restore order among the armed forces and population
panicked by the rapid advance of the German blitzkrieg through western Russia.
Some pundits point out that Saddam sees himself in the same position as
Stalin, and is depending on his "organs" to use guns and threats to mobilize
the troops and people to defend the country. What is forgotten is that in
1941, the Germans were initially greeted as liberators by the majority of
Russian civilians. But the Germans were not there to liberate Russians, but to
conquer Russia so they could enslave the population and steal their land. The
Russian people soon turned against the Germans. But 24 years earlier, when the
Germans conquered much of western Russia during World War I, the Russians
under German control were allowed to govern themselves. There was no
resistance to the Germans then (but there an invasion from Russia after the
Germans left). So Saddam feels that if he can demonize the invaders
sufficiently in the media, and keep his secret police and security forces
forcing Iraqis to fight long enough, he can defeat the invaders.

Saddam also learned from the World War II Nazi Germans, even though the
Germans lost World War II. The Sunni Arabs of Iraq admired the Nazis from the
beginning, in the 1930s. Much of the Nazi "National Socialist" philosophy was
adopted by the Iraqi Baath party. Especially government control of most of the
economy and hatred of Jews, and anyone who "is not like us." But Saddam was
especially attracted to one uniquely Nazi institution; the Schutzstaffel
("SS"). The Nazis developed special police, security and military units
composed of party members, and called it the SS. The majority of those in the
SS were in the Waffen SS ("armed SS"), well trained, armed and motivated
combat units. Saddam has done the same thing with his Republican Guard. But
here he has gone the Nazis one better. While the Waffen SS never comprised
more than seven percent of the German armed forces, the Republican Guard makes
up over twenty percent of the Iraqi armed forces. Like the Waffen SS, the
Republican Guard can be expected to stand and fight to the death. While the
Republican Guard are much less capable soldiers than the Waffen SS, they are
just as reliable. And Saddam no doubt takes some comfort from the fact that
the Nazis formed three SS divisions from pro-German Moslems in the Balkans
during World War II.

As the old saying goes, you can learn a lot about a person by finding out who
their heroes are.

Kurds continue the struggle for an independent state
Reporter: Tracy Bowden

KERRY O'BRIEN: Turkey's refusal to allow US troops to stage through its
territory may have delayed the opening of a second front, but with US airborne
forces now moving into northern Iraq, Kurdish fighters are keen to join the
battle against Saddam Hussein.

There is also the danger of a war within a war as Turkey threatens to send
troops into Kurdish-controlled northern Iraq.

Tracy Bowden explains why the 3 million or so mainly Muslim Kurds who live in
Iraq will fiercely resist any threat to their dream of independence.

And I should warn her report does contain some disturbing library images.

This is immensely important.

We cannot afford to miss the opportunity, we cannot afford to underestimate
the importance of this moment.

For thousands of years the Kurdish people have lived in the mountain region
spanning present day Iran, Iraq, Syria and Turkey, but the history of the
Kurds and their struggle for an independent state is a story of bloodshed and
betrayal.

DR BARHAM SALIH, PRIME MINISTER, PATRIOTIC UNION OF KURDISTAN: Kurds are
victims of history ... we have been given a lousy hand by history, by
politics, and the politics of major powers including the United States.

The Iraqi Kurds' battle to be free of Saddam Hussein has seen them endure
terrible hardship.

15 years ago, a cruel chemical attack from the Iraqi regime.

HAYAL SYAN, KURDISTAN DEMOCRATIC PARTY (AUSTRALIA): We have bad memories of
Saddam Hussein.

For example, in 1988, 8,000 people in Harabji were killed by a chemical bomb
and 182,000 people disappeared.

There's another way for the bloodshed to stop ... and that is for the Iraqi
military and the Iraqi people to take matters into their own hands.

After the last Gulf War, the US encouraged but failed to support a Kurdish
uprising against Saddam Hussein.

Tens of thousands of Kurdish men were rounded up and executed.

Kurdish refugees flooded into Turkey and Iran.

PAUL WHITE, CENTRE FOR PEACE AND CONFLICT STUDIES: The Kurds, rightly or
wrongly, have a lot of faith in America.

They never seem to lose faith that America ... this time ... will come through.

Simko Halmet has been monitoring the war from his Sydney home.

Speaking daily with friends and family in northern Iraq, he says they are
afraid but welcome the Americans.

SIMKO HALMET, KURDISTAN DEMOCRATIC PARTY (AUSTRALIA): We have suffered war
nearly a half century from this kind of dictatorship and this kind of regime
and the Kurdish people, they always hoped for a good future.

Since 1991, the region in the north of Iraq, known as Iraqi Kurdistan, has
been protected by a no-fly zone.

It's the closest thing the Kurds have to a homeland, governed jointly by the
Kurdistan Democratic Party, or the KDP, and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan,
the PUK.

SIMKO HALMET, KURDISTAN DEMOCRATIC PARTY (AUSTRALIA): I believe since the
withdrawal of the Iraqis from the area, the Kurdish people in north of Iraq
have experienced for the first time the pure democratic feeling towards
the ... their living system in the area, which they proved to the world that
the Kurds can manage themselves, for the Kurds can leave in peace.

Not quite according to Dr Paul White, from the Centre for Peace and Conflict
Studies in Sydney.

PAUL WHITE, CENTRE FOR PEACE AND CONFLICT STUDIES: Certainly the sad history
of the Kurdish no-fly zone since 1991 doesn't give us a lot of faith that the
Kurdish nationalist parties of Iraq have the answer.

As I said, they've spent most of the time since 1991, unfortunately, fighting
with each other.

Now as military action is stepped up in the north and Kurdish soldiers stand
ready to fight alongside the coalition, there are fears of a war within a war.

Turkey is threatens to send troops into northern Iraq ... ostensibly to
prevent the massive flood of refugees it saw 12 years ago.

HAYAL SYAN, KURDISTAN DEMOCRATIC PARTY (AUSTRALIA): They will not be even
welcomed by Kurdish people in the area and Kurdish people are ready to defend
the Iraqi Kurdistan, even if they've got only knife to against --

Turkish attack.

Turkey has the region's largest Kurdish population.

A 20-year civil law against the outlawed Kurdish Workers Party, or PKK, has
seen Turkish troops move into northern Iraq to attack the rebels.

PAUL WHITE, CENTRE FOR PEACE AND CONFLICT STUDIES: Turkey's real motivation is
to do with preventing the Iraqi Kurds establishing a more concrete form of
autonomy, or maybe even independence for themselves.

Turkey fears if that occurred then the Kurds of Turkey will say, "Look, our
brothers in Iraq have some sort of now defined and guaranteed autonomy.

Why are we continued to be denied that in Turkey?"

In northern Iraq, the Kurds are fearful -- fearful of chemical warfare from
within Iraq and fearful of the future and what form a post-Saddam Hussein Iraq
would take.

They hope that a better future lies ahead, but their past has taught them not
to expect too much.

SIMKO HALMET, KURDISTAN DEMOCRATIC PARTY (AUSTRALIA): We look forward for
comprehensive change towards comprehensive democracy, and we look forward for
getting rid of the dictatorship which we have been suffering very badly.

History
Origins
The Ottoman state began as one of many small Turkish states that emerged in
Asia Minor during the breakdown of the empire of the Seljuk Turks. The Ottoman
Turks began to absorb the other states, and during the reign (1451–81) of
Muhammad II they ended all other local Turkish dynasties. The early phase of
Ottoman expansion took place under Osman I, Orkhan, Murad I, and Beyazid I at
the expense of the Byzantine Empire, Bulgaria, and Serbia. Bursa fell in 1326
and Adrianople (the modern Edirne) in 1361; each in turn became the capital of
the empire. The great Ottoman victories of Kosovo (1389) and Nikopol (1396)
placed large parts of the Balkan Peninsula under Ottoman rule and awakened
Europe to the Ottoman danger. The Ottoman siege of Constantinople was lifted
at the appearance of Timur, who defeated and captured Beyazid in 1402. The
Ottomans, however, soon rallied.

The Period of Great Expansion
The empire, reunited by Muhammad I, expanded victoriously under Muhammad's
successors Murad II and Muhammad II. The victory (1444) at Varna over a
crusading army led by Ladislaus III of Poland was followed in 1453 by the
capture of Constantinople. Within a century the Ottomans had changed from a
nomadic horde to the heirs of the most ancient surviving empire of Europe.
Their success was due partly to the weakness and disunity of their
adversaries, partly to their excellent and far superior military organization.
Their army comprised numerous Christians—not only conscripts, who were
organized as the corps of Janissaries, but also volunteers. Turkish expansion
reached its peak in the 16th cent. under Selim I and Sulayman I (Sulayman the
Magnificent).

The Hungarian defeat (1526) at Mohács prepared the way for the capture (1541)
of Buda and the absorption of the major part of Hungary by the Ottoman Empire;
Transylvania became a tributary principality, as did Walachia and Moldavia.
The Asian borders of the empire were pushed deep into Persia and Arabia. Selim
I defeated the Mamluks of Egypt and Syria, took Cairo in 1517, and assumed the
succession to the caliphate. Algiers was taken in 1518, and Mediterranean
commerce was threatened by corsairs, such as Barbarossa, who sailed under
Turkish auspices. Most of the Venetian and other Latin possessions in Greece
also fell to the sultans.

During the reign of Sulayman I began (1535) the traditional friendship between
France and Turkey, directed against Hapsburg Austria and Spain. Sulayman
reorganized the Turkish judicial system, and his reign saw the flowering of
Turkish literature, art, and architecture. In practice the prerogatives of the
sultan were limited by the spirit of Muslim canonical law (sharia), and he
usually shared his authority with the chief preserver (sheyhülislam) of the
sharia and with the grand vizier (chief executive officer).

In the progressive decay that followed Sulayman's death, the clergy (ulema)
and the Janissaries gained power and exercised a profound, corrupting
influence. The first serious blow by Europe to the empire was the naval defeat
of Lepanto (1571; see Lepanto, battle of), inflicted on the fleet of Selim II
by the Spanish and Venetians under John of Austria. However, Murad IV in the
17th cent. temporarily restored Turkish military prestige by his victory
(1638) over Persia. Crete was conquered from Venice, and in 1683 a huge
Turkish army under Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa surrounded Vienna. The relief of
Vienna by John III of Poland and the subsequent campaigns of Charles V of
Lorraine, Louis of Baden, and Eugene of Savoy ended in negotiations in 1699
(see Karlowitz, Treaty of), which cost Turkey Hungary and other territories.

Decline
The breakup of the state gained impetus with the Russo-Turkish Wars in the
18th cent. Egypt was only temporarily lost to Napoleon's army, but the Greek
War of Independence and its sequels, the Russo-Turkish War of 1828–29 (see
Adrianople, Treaty of), and the war with Muhammad Ali of Egypt resulted in the
loss of Greece and Egypt, the protectorate of Russia over Moldavia and
Walachia, and the semi-independence of Serbia. Drastic reforms were introduced
in the late 18th and early 19th cent. by Selim III and Mahmud II, but they
came too late. By the 19th cent. Turkey was known as the Sick Man of Europe.

Through a series of treaties of capitulation from the 16th to the 18th cent.
the Ottoman Empire gradually lost its economic independence. Although Turkey
was theoretically among the victors in the Crimean War, it emerged from the
war economically exhausted. The Congress of Paris (1856) recognized the
independence and integrity of the Ottoman Empire, but this event marked the
confirmation of the empire's dependency rather than of its rights as a
European power.

The rebellion (1875) of Bosnia and Hercegovina precipitated the Russo-Turkish
War of 1877–78, in which Turkey was defeated despite its surprisingly vigorous
stand. Romania (i.e., Walachia and Moldavia), Serbia, and Montenegro were
declared fully independent, and Bosnia and Hercegovina passed under Austrian
administration. Bulgaria, made a virtually independent principality, annexed
(1885) Eastern Rumelia with impunity.

Sultan Abd al-Majid, who in 1839 issued a decree containing an important body
of civil reforms, was followed (1861) by Abd al-Aziz, whose reign witnessed
the rise of the liberal party. Its leader, Midhat Pasha, succeeded in deposing
(1876) Abd al-Aziz. Abd al-Hamid II acceded (1876) after the brief reign of
Murad V. A liberal constitution was framed by Midhat, and the first Turkish
parliament opened in 1877, but the sultan soon dismissed it and began a rule
of personal despotism. The Armenian massacres (see Armenia) of the late 19th
cent. turned world public opinion against Turkey. Abd al-Hamid was victorious
in the Greco-Turkish war of 1897, but Crete, which had been the issue, was
ultimately gained by Greece.

Collapse
In 1908 the Young Turk movement, a reformist and strongly nationalist group,
with many adherents in the army, forced the restoration of the constitution of
1876, and in 1909 the parliament deposed the sultan and put Muhammad V on the
throne. In the two successive Balkan Wars (1912–13), Turkey lost nearly its
entire territory in Europe to Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, and newly independent
Albania. The nationalism of the Young Turks, whose leader Enver Pasha gained
virtual dictatorial power by a coup in 1913, antagonized the remaining
minorities in the empire.

The outbreak of World War I found Turkey lined up with the Central Powers.
Although Turkish troops succeeded against the Allies in the Gallipoli campaign
(1915), Arabia rose against Turkish rule, and British forces occupied (1917)
Baghdad and Jerusalem. In 1918, Turkish resistance collapsed in Asia and
Europe. An armistice was concluded in October, and the Ottoman Empire came to
an end. The Treaty of Sèvres (see Sèvres, Treaty of) confirmed its
dissolution. With the victory of the Turkish nationalists, who had refused to
accept the peace terms and overthrew the sultan in 1922, modern Turkey's
history began.
