Bagdad
This city was founded on the Tigris by the second Abbaside Caliph Abou Giafar
al Mansur (762 or 764) and named by him Medinet es-Selam, or City of
Salvation; Bagdad is a popular name said to mean "Garden of Dat", a Mussulman
dervish. During five centuries it was the rich and brilliant capital of the
famous Arabian Empire. Houlagou, a grandson of Genghis Khan, entered it in
1262; it afterwards became a possession of the Kara Koyouli Turks, was taken
by Tamerlane, and, in 1517, fell into the hands of the Persians who, except
for a short interval in the sixteenth century, ruled over it until 1638, when
Sultan Murad made it definitively a city of the Ottoman Empire. It is now the
chief town of a vilayet, or district, of the same name, and has lost much of
its former importance, though it still remains the most important city of
Asiatic Turkey, after Damascus and Smyrna, and a great emporium of
international trade. It exports textile fabrics, gold and silverware, horses,
dates, etc. There are many beautiful mosques in the city, and the ruins of its
ancient walls are still visible. The climate is hot; fevers are frequent, and
the plague sometimes appears. Its population, taken as including the
neighbouring villages, is said to be about 45,000; of these 86,000 are
Mussulmans, mostly Arab Sunnites and Persian Shiites; 52,000 are Jews, and
7,000 Christians. Turkish statistics, however, are usually very uncertain. The
Christians are divided as follows: 3,300 Armenians (including about 1,000
Catholics and 100 Protestants), 100 Greeks (50 Catholics); 1,600 (3,000?)
Chaldeans; 1,200 Syrians; and 500 Latins.
In 1638, some days after the Turkish conquest, owing to the kindness of Abbas
the Great, Urban VIII created, at the expense of a pious French lady, a Latin
bishopric for the Catholics in Persia, under the title of Babylon, the old
city being then (though erroneously) identified with Bagdad. For a long time
the bishops of this title, when they came to the East, resided at Hamadan, in
Persia, and for various reasons there were often no bishops, but only vicars
Apostolic. It was only in 1742 that Père Joseph-Marie de Jésus, a Carmelite,
was allowed to enter this Mussulman town. In 1848 the see became an
archbishopric, with Ispahan as a suffragan see, till 1874; the archbishop,
Monsignor Trioche, was appointed Apostolic Delegate for the Catholics of
Oriental rites. He resigned this office in 1850, and until his death, in 1887,
there were special delegates, the last of whom, Monsignor Altmayer, succeeded
him and reunited both titles, as did his successor, Monsignor Jean Drure. We
must here, moreover, notice that the Latin Archbishop of Bagdad, according to
the decree of Urban VII, must always be of French nationality.

The closest star system to the Sun is the Alpha Centauri system. Of the three
stars in the system, the dimmest -- called Proxima Centauri -- is actually the
nearest star. The bright stars Alpha Centauri A and B form a close binary as
they are separated by only 23 times the Earth- Sun distance - slightly greater
than the distance between Uranus and the Sun. In the above picture, the
brightness of the stars overwhelm the photograph causing an illusion of great
size, even though the stars are really just small points of light. The Alpha
Centauri system is not visible in much of the northern hemisphere. Alpha
Centauri A, also known as Rigil Kentaurus, is the brightest star in the
constellation of Centaurus and is the fourth brightest star in the night sky.
Sirius is the brightest even thought it is more than twice as far away. By an
exciting coincidence, Alpha Centauri A is the same type of star as our Sun,
causing many to speculate that it might contain planets that harbor life.

The Zennist
Zen/Ch'an FAQ
Dark Zen FAQ
Basis of Dark Zen
Dark Zen Meditation
Dark Zen Teachings
The Basis of Dark Zen
Question: What is the basis for your teaching?
Dark Zen: Our basis, if you wish to call it that, is Mind’s luminous
originative power which can also be characterized as an intelligible light.
Its other name is Buddha who is a “light-maker.”
Question: I’ve read that the mind is luminous. But I am afraid that I have
never heard that the Buddha is a “light-maker”. Is this mentioned in the
Buddhist canon?
Dark Zen: Yes. In the earliest scriptures, for example, the Buddha is
sometimes described as “the bringer of light”. In one account, he was
described as a “newly arisen sun” who has a “corona around him.” It is also
said that the Buddha could "make the world bright." Now, if you strip away all
the poetic imagery, what is left? I can only see an originative power which is
prior to all things.
Question: Permit me to back up. I think I understand what you're saying. But
what I had originally in mind to ask you is what is the historical basis of
your teaching?
Dark Zen: From the corpus of old manuscripts discovered at Tun-huang around
the turn of the last century, it is clear that Zen transmitted the 'dark
principle.' The term is used a number of times in these old documents. In one
of the oldest transmission documents found at Tun-huang it mentions the dark
principle. In fact, the title of the document is as follows: Former Worthies
Gather at the Mount Shuang-feng and Each Talks of the Dark Principle . I
should also point out that in this same document there is no indication that
there is a transmission going back to the Buddha. Nor, is there a
master/disciple succession. But what is clear is that each Zen master is such
in virtue of his insight into the dark principle.
Question: But what about the fact of a Zen lineage going all the way back to
the Buddha as found in the book, The Transmission of the Lamp?
Dark Zen: It is, I think, a tall tale. It's a non-scriptural creation by Sung
Dynasty Zennists who took selections from older works and made a singular work
befitting of their theory. But it all falls apart when we compare it with the
Mahayana Sutra entitled The End of Transmitting the Dharma Basket upon which
The Transmission of the Lamp is largely based. The Sutra provides us with a
list of 23 Indian ancestors, beginning with Mahakashyapa and ending with Simha
Bhiksu. There is no mention of Bodhidharma or his master, Prajnatara. In fact,
the Sutra is about transmitting the canon (Dharma)--it’s not about Zen. It is
also noteworthy that in the Avatamsaka Sutra (the Gandavyuha chapter) it is
mentioned that great disciples such as Mahakashyapa “were not capable of
perpetuating the lineage of Buddhas.” Obviously, something is wrong. This
passage doesn't square with the later Zen theory that Mahakashyapa was
transmitted by the Buddha. Why then would the Buddha transmit to Mahakashyapa
if he were incapable of perpetuating the lineage of Buddhas? As I read between
the lines, Mahakashyapa is only worthy, like Ananda, to transmit the canon.
Nothing more. He was incapable of transmitting the Buddha lineage which is the
dark principle.
Question: Can you describe this so-called 'dark principle' of which you speak?
Dark Zen: It's an intractable subject, I must say. If I describe it by saying
that all constructed things flow from this dark principle while it, itself,
remains unconstruced and unmoved, what can such words really explain? At this
stage it is a far off goal, like some great mountain seen in the distance.
You, as a person, must still make the journey on your own.
Question: Isn't this just the problem of our need to think too much?
Dark Zen: Yes, of course, over-thinking can be a problem. On the other hand,
some Zennists teach that we should repress our thoughts and be like a dead
tree. This is wrong. But I happen to think that right thoughts are useful,
especially those which give us right information. Information can help guide
us in the right direction. Sometimes it leads us in the wrong direction.
Often, it is true, we have to reconsider our former thoughts and question this
information. We may find that they weren't much after all.
Question: Yes, I tend to agree with you. But back to the dark principle. Could
you at least sketch it out?
Dark Zen: I will try although I am hesitant to say too much about it. I can't
promise you miracles! [laughing] First of all, each of us has access to this
dark principle. All of us can tap into it. This is a given. However, owing to
our habit of following appearances, we have lost the ability to communicate
with it even though it is coexistent with us. Now, in the case of the Buddha,
with regard to the dark principle, when he reached complete enlightenment he
entered into what might be called primordial light. But more than just mere
light, it is sheer productive power, or the same, sheer potentiality.
Naturally, it is free and independent of phenomena although without it,
phenomena would not be. With that I can't say much more.
Question: How does this apply to Bodhidharma’s teaching?
Dark Zen: When Bodhidharma spoke of the Two Entrances, one was called the
entrance by principle. This principle, of course, is the dark principle. To
realize it was by means of wall-contemplation (biguan). Wall-contemplation
means to turn to the real by rejecting phenomena, so as to abide in the
primordial light. In this light there is nothing further to cultivate. This
light, or I should say, this dark principle, is a sheer productiveness and is
equally self-knowing. In Zen we call this the Great Perfection of the Path
which was first mentioned in the work, the Records of the Lanka Masters.
Question: When the Buddha converged with this dark principle, as you allege,
could he influence the weather or change the economic conditions of his
country? [laughing]
Dark Zen: We are talking about two different worlds. The Buddha's world is the
unconditioned world of potentiality before our senses cut it up and our brain
conceptualizes it. The one of which you speak with its weather conditions and
poverty is the highly conditioned human, samsaric world. Here sentient beings
choose to look at this mysterious, unconditioned world in a certain,
predetermined way, assembling it into a plurality of things and conditions.
Furthermore, they crave this particular exotic view which ironically ends with
their suffering. But if beings elect to transcend the human world, eventually
reaching a higher plane of being, then, in such another world, sure they can
influence the weather! [laughing]
Question: Well, I'm not sure I understand you. I only see the human world. It
is the one I care about. But let me ask you this question: How do you
understand all this in your daily life? This is what really interests me.
Dark Zen: When we tap into this dark principle, what little we can at first,
it leads us to its fullness in time. As a result, one becomes blissful as this
light gradually de-conditions unwholesome states of being. Even if you are in
pain, for example, this light is at work aiding you to win your freedom. It is
like an angel who insures that part of you will join the Buddhas.
Question: That is interesting. I like what I hear you saying. So, this is not
some intellectual exercise after all. Something actually happens in one's
inner being that helps them in their ordinary lives.
Dark Zen: Oh, but of course! It is most extraordinary. Let me also say that
one senses at all times an illuminating energy present within them. In my
case, as I turn to it, I become mor

Speech Synthesis: An Explanation
Artificial speech
Scientists have tried to make natural-sounding synthetic speech for a long
time, for a number of reasons. Speech synthesis is an important research tool
in the study of speech production and perception and speech and hearing
disorders. In addition, automatic generation of speech provides communication
for those who have lost the power to speak through stroke, disease or
accident. Speech synthesis also serves as a central component in commercial
software that converts text to speech automatically, commonly known as text-to-
speech systems.
Dedicated research at many centers has advanced our understanding of speech
production and development of methods of speech synthesis. Major
contributions to this field have were made by the late Dr. Dennis Klatt at
MIT, among them the development of KLSYN, the most advanced formant
synthesizer, and DECtalk, a remarkable text-to-speech system offered by
Digital Equipment Corporation.
Speech and the source-filter theory
Klatt based his work on an insight of Dr. Gunnar Fant of Stockholm, usually
expressed as the source-filter model of speech. About 1960, Fant offered to
the research community the idea that the production of speech could be
understood and simulated by treating it as the generation of sound by a
source, and the subsequent passage of that sound through a more or less
complicated filter.
The source sound can be created by glottal vibration--vibration of the vocal
cords--which occurs when air is made to pass through the slit formed by a
nearly-closed glottis with sufficient force, provided by the lungs. When the
glottis is open, the source sound can be created by the turbulence of air
passing through the vocal tract and generating noise, as in whispering. The
sound passes through the throat, past the tongue, which can assume a number of
positions, past the teeth and lips and out of the mouth, and out of the nose
as well, if the velum, the valve connecting the throat and nose, is open. At
each obstacle, cavity or other discontinuity, reflections, resonances and
delays change the way the source sounds, forming the filter in Fant's source-
filter model.
An important aspect of Fant's insight is that it allows the accumulated
knowledge of electrical filter theory, today including digital filtering, to
be applied to the simulation of this process. Basically, one begins speech
synthesis by creating a source waveform that resembles glottal vibration or
noise. Fant first used conventional electronic components, like those in a
radio or television set, to make an oscillator and filters. Today, such
development is done using a computer, where a stream of numbers represents the
source waveform, and filtering is done by arithmetic. The filtering
arithmetic uses the numbers in the stream to solve equations that describe the
effects of the cavities and tubes that form the vocal tract--the filter.
Klatt's synthesizers, KLSYN and KLSYN88, are computer programs used at
universities where speech is studied. Sensimetrics distributes its own,
updated version of KLSYN, based on Klatt's research, to the research community
as SenSyn.
The origin of HLsyn
KLSYN uses more than fifty-five parameters to generate speech, of which about
forty need to be adjusted continuously during speech. The remaining dozen set
certain talker characteristics and generally do not need to be changed once
set. Not all of the forty variable parameters need to be adjusted at the same
time, but when a formant synthesizer is made to speak, all forty need to be
considered by the researcher.
This process was examined a few years ago by Dr. Kenneth Stevens, a colleague
of Klatt's who heads speech research at MIT's Research Laboratory of
Electronics, and is one of the founders of Sensimetrics. After discussion,
Stevens and Klatt decided that a small number of parameters might allow speech
synthesis that was more realistic than the results obtainable with KLSYN.
Klatt was unable to participate in the development of this idea, due to
illness. However, with funding from the SBIR program of the National
Institutes of Health (NIDCD), Stevens and others in the speech group at
Sensimetrics pursued the idea of high-level synthesis, seeking a minimal set
of parameters required to synthesize fully detailed individual human speech.
The result is a new synthesizer, HLsyn. Work is now proceeding, with
continuing NIH-SBIR support, on a new system, HLTalk, that will automatically
convert text to clear, natural-sounding speech.

Time to Face Mecca
The House of Saud.
Back to the Terrorist's Supporters Page
By Tom Gross, a British journalist who has spent the past six years reporting
from the Mideast
February 8, 2002 8:40 a.m.
n his State of the Union address last week, President Bush indicated where the
war on terror is heading. Iraq, Iran, North Korea, "and their terrorist allies
constitute an axis of evil," he declared. Bush received considerable praise
from the pundits. Charles Krauthammer, for example, congratulated him on
an "astonishingly bold address" which was "about preventing the next Sept.
11." The prime target, it was generally agreed, would be Iraq.
Yet it has been clear since September 11 — and actually since well before
then — that if America wants to prevent a major terrorist onslaught, there is
one government above all others that must be reformed or replaced. And it is
not that of Saddam, but the House of Saud.
The Saudi regime — not merely its exiled son, Osama bin Laden — bears a major
share of the responsibility for international terrorism. Further acts of
terror against Americans, of the kind seen in Africa, Yemen, New York, and
Washington, are likely to follow unless some serious pressure is placed on
Riyadh both to stop sponsoring Islamic extremists, and to allow moderates some
significant role in government.
The Saudis aid terrorism both directly and indirectly. On the direct level,
they fund — at government and at private levels — Islamic terrorist groups
throughout the world. For example, evidence uncovered in Afghanistan by
British and American intelligence officers clearly implicates a number of
leading Saudis, some of them members of the royal family, in the funding of al
Qaeda.
The Saudi government is also the chief financial backer of the Palestinian
terror group Hamas. It was members of Hamas who taught shoe-bomber Richard
Reid, who attempted to blow up an American Airlines jet, how to dry the
explosive triacetone triperoxide and mold it into shoes and belts. He received
this instruction when he visited Gaza last June.
In addition to providing support for terrorist groups, the Saudis have helped
to shape those groups' ideology by exporting an extreme form of Islamist
philosophy.
The Saudis are also responsible for terror on an indirect level. By refusing
to permit any opposition to the regime other than that of the extremist imams,
who support bin Ladenism, they have virtually forced young Saudis who want to
express their opposition to the ruling family's brutal, corrupt ways into the
arms of those imams. The result — al Qaeda — merely mirrors their own lack of
respect for life and humanity.
These extremists will eventually overthrow the regime if it doesn't reform.
Signs of dissent are growing. Just before Christmas, for example, 1,000 young
men were reported to have rioted in Jeddah.
The Saudi regime regularly dishonors the moderate Islamic tradition with its
beheadings, amputations, and floggings. Its appalling treatment of women (the
religious police patrol the streets with electric camel prods, on the lookout
for women exposing a little too much under their chadors), the vile anti-
Semitism and Holocaust denial that permeate the state-controlled media, and
the general lack of tolerance for Christians and Jews — in all these respects,
the Saudis are worse than Iran or Iraq.
When it comes to inciting Islamic extremism, too, the Saudi record is in many
respects worse than Iraq or Iran. It is no accident that the Saudis enjoyed
warm relations with the Taliban long after Teheran broke ties. As Abdullah Al
Refaie, editor-in-chief of the Saudi paper Al Muslimoon, put it: "The Iranian
claim that the Taliban have discredited Islam is simply not true. The Taliban,
in fact, have a good record of behaving as faithful and moderate Muslims."
The Saudi regime's brutal record of torture is ignored by the West — even when
Britons, Belgians, and Canadians are the victims, as was the case last year.
As the British media revealed last month, during a 67-day period of torture,
Saudi police hung from the ceiling a middle-aged British man who was being
held on trumped-up charges, beat him with a pickaxe handle, and threatened to
have his wife repeatedly gang-raped until he confessed.
And yet the Saudi government is often described by American media (Bob's Note:
the Government-Media Complex) and politicians as "moderate" and "our
partners," and is subject to much flattery from American and British halls of
government. As with the Palestinian Authority, reports about the true extent
of the awfulness of the Saudi regime are largely ignored by the Western media,
creating a dangerously misleading impression of the regime. Last week, for
example, the New York Times sub-headlined its news interview with Crown Prince
Abdullah, the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia: "Dispensing wisdom, receiving
praise."
Western governments have spent far too long propping up the regime in Riyadh,
as they have the one in Gaza, on the principle that the alternative would be
worse. But in fact, there are plenty of moderate voices, among both the Saudis
and the Palestinians, who are desperate to find Western support but too
terrified to speak out against their native regimes.
To say the Saudis have been less than fully cooperative in the war on
terrorism would be an understatement. The lack of meaningful criticism or
rebuke from the U.S. to Riyadh for the fact that 15 of the 19 suicide
hijackers were Saudis (and at least one entered the U.S. on a Saudi diplomatic
passport) — a fact the Saudis only acknowledged this week — that over 100 of
the 158 detainees being held in U.S. custody at Guantanamo Bay are Saudis,
that 240 of the 250 al Qaeda prisoners Pakistan is holding are Saudis — this
is surely one of the main reasons why the Saudi ruling class are continuing to
fund al Qaeda and other Islamic terror groups.
Citing Western intelligence sources, Turkish, German, and British newspapers
all last month reported that Saudi intelligence is currently financing the
relocation of thousands of al Qaeda insurgents to Lebanon, the West Bank, and
Gaza. The German daily Die Welt reported last Wednesday that Saudi officials
have helped place many of them in the Ein Hilwe Palestinian refugee camp in
Lebanon, and plan to finance their relocation to territory controlled by
Yasser Arafat's Palestinian Authority. (Not unrelated, Die Welt also reported
that it was Saudi intelligence that paid Iran $10 million to buy the weapons
for the Palestinian Authority that were captured by Israel in the Red Sea on
January 3.)
Indeed it is the Saudis, not the Iraqis, who one way or another leave their
fingerprints on virtually every major development among Muslim terrorists.
Take, for example, the recent use of women suicide bombers against Israeli
civilians. The Islamic authorities in Gaza have so far ordered only men, not
women, to blow up Israeli teenagers. The Palestinians behind these recent
female attacks (only one of which was "successful") cite as their inspiration
last August's fatwa, issued by the Saudi High Islamic Council, exhorting women
to become suicide bombers.
Even with the Taliban's collapse, ideological justifying of the September 11
attacks (and of similar future acts) continues among Saudis. Consider, for
example, Saudi Sheikh Safar Abd Al-Rahman Al-Hawali as quoted in Al-Hayat, a
London-based Arabic daily, on January 13, 2002: "Since when is the
Pentagon 'innocent'? The famous American intellectual Gore Vidal himself
called it 'Hell and a nest of Satans'... [It is] a den of spies and a Mafia
nest." He went

Complete summary of Dark City (1998)
At midnight, all inhabitants in the city fall into a deep sleep. However, a
man without a memory wakes up suddenly in a hotel room. Looking for signs of
his identity, he finds a postcard of Shell Beach. The telephone rings and the
caller tells the man to flee. The man finds the naked, mutilated corpse of a
woman in the room. He's pursued by strangers wearing black but he gets away.
The hotel clerk tells the man, Murdoch, that his wallet was found at an
Automat.
Nightclub singer Emma Murdoch is summoned to meet with psychiatrist Dr.
Schreber, the caller on the telephone, about her missing husband John.
Schreber claims that John is his patient and may have suffered a violent,
psychotic break.
At the Automat, Joh

• Neutrons, Electrons and Morons... IP: *.cm-upc.chello.se
Gość: [...] 13.03.03, 13:21 zarchiwizowany
A major research institution has recently announced the discovery of the
heaviest chemical element yet known to science.
The new element has been tentatively named Governmentium.
Governmentium has 1 neutron, 12 assistant neutrons, 75 deputy neutrons, and
224 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312.
These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are
surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons.
Since governmentium has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected
as it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A minute amount
of governmentium causes one reaction to take over 4 days to complete when
it would normally take less than a second.
Governmentium has a normal half-life of 3 years; it does not decay, but
instead undergoes a reorganization in which a portion of the assistant
neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places. In fact, governmentium's mass
will actually increase over time, since each reorganization will cause some
morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes.
This characteristic of moron-promotion leads some scientists to speculate that
governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a certain quantity in
concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as Critical Morass.

Explanation: Why do many galaxies appear as spirals? A striking example is
M101, shown above, whose relatively close distance of about 22 million light
years allow it to be studied in some detail. Recent evidence indicates that a
close gravitational interaction with a neighboring galaxy created waves of
high mass and condensed gas which continue to orbit the galaxy center. These
waves compress existing gas and cause star formation. One result is that M101,
also called the Pinwheel Galaxy, has several extremely bright star-forming
regions (called HII regions) spread across its spiral arms. M101 is so large
that its immense gravity distorts smaller nearby galaxies.

waves compress existing gas and cause star formation. One result is that M101,
also called the Pinwheel Galaxy, has several extremely bright star-forming
regions (called HII regions) spread across its spiral arms. M101 is so large
that its immense gravity distorts smaller nearby galaxies.
